Atazar (El)

EL ATAZAR

Known since Arab times, this municipality gives its name to one of the largest reservoirs in the region of Madrid.

With the mountains and water as protagonists, El Atazar is the ideal place for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing or canoeing, as well as cycling or hiking.

Come and stroll along some of the trails that are prepared for all levels of difficulty and are full of idyllic places, such as the Senda del Riato, the Arroyo de la Pasá, the Dehesa or the Pisachón and Quemaó Viejo.

In the municipality there are many examples of traditional constructions, such as corrals and tinados. Another important element is Las Eras, located in a staggered form on the slope of the hill on which the nucleus is based.  The terraced fields where cereal was cultivated in the past, which together with livestock, were the livelihood of the people, also remain in the landscape.

Also worth seeing is the baroque style Church of Santa Catalina or the Fuente Vieja (Old Fountain), located one kilometer before reaching the village and dating from the 15th century.
