Pantano de San Juan

SAN JUAN RESERVOIR

Located in the municipalities of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, El Tiemblo, Cebreros and Pelayos de la Presa. This reservoir is the only one in the region in which bathing and motorized water activities are allowed. The visitor can enjoy 14 kilometers of beach only 70 km from Madrid, in a privileged natural environment.

The most visited areas are the Cerro de San Esteban (right bank of the reservoir) and the San Yelmo boat launch (left bank), while the best areas for recreation are the "Virgen de la Nueva" and "El Muro", which have beach bars and boat rental companies.

Its waters hide two important historical buildings that are part of the cultural legacy of San Martín de Valdeiglesias: a medieval bridge with eight spans that joined the two banks of the river and the ruins of the original hermitage of the Virgen de la Nueva, which were flooded by the waters when the reservoir was built. Despite this, the tradition of making a pilgrimage to the hermitage of the patron saint every Easter Monday has not been lost since the faithful built a new building very close to the original site, this pilgrimage is known as "los ranchos".
