If you visit us for five days we suggest a plan. Enjoy it!.
Morning, afternoon and evening, there is no time to waste, we have to do many things and take advantage of the time, the options are varied and there are for all tastes and ages, we offer you several possibilities, you choose.
If what you like is to take advantage of the morning, and enjoy the typical autumn fresh air of Madrid that allows us to be active, we suggest you to stroll around the neighbourhood of La Latina, one of the most typical and ancient Madrid, with its winding streets, which evoke an atmosphere, bustling and very commercial Madrid. A district chosen by many to going for beers, or wines and to accompany with a good snack (tapa), in one of the innumerable terraces of typical bars, restaurants and taverns, besides being able to discover unique corners, as for example the basilicas or churches that mark their streets. We recommend visiting for its history, on our route through the district, the Puerta de Toledo, which gave access to the centre of Madrid from the southern roads, after crossing the Manzanares from 'los Carabancheles', and was built in honour of King Ferdinand VII, as a triumphal arch in commemoration of the Spanish independence of the French troops. If you want to continue walking, come to Lavapiés, a neighbourhood that doesn't rest, where strolling through its narrow and steep streets is a delight, because every few minutes we find the typical taverns, bars and cafés with the hustle and bustle of a multicultural neighbourhood, authentic where they are, for its buildings and neighbours, among which the famous 'corrala' stands out, typical traditional house in Madrid full of history and witness to the passing of generations, with its balcony, common courtyard and corridors, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument.
We go shopping in Madrid, and specifically we do it in one of the areas that offers the greatest offer of shop windows, shopping centres and fashion. We start in Moncloa, near the 'Arco de la Victoria', going down along the Princesa street, until the Plaza de España, we will continue along Gran Vía, passing by the Plaza de Callao, the Fuencarral street and we will finish in Chueca, neighbourhood with a great atmosphere, ideal to rest and restore your energy. On our way we will find clothes, shoe shops, sports goods, beauty products, curiosities, souvenirs, and of course large shopping centres in the neuralgic points. We can alternate our shopping with a visit to the monuments along the route, in which we highlight the aforementioned 'Arco de la Victoria'. Passing through the Conde Duque Cultural Centre, on the outskirts of Princesa Street, going up Gran Vía and near Callao, we will access the Monastery of the Descalzas Reales and the nearby Monastery of La Encarnación. If we continue towards Chueca and turn right at the confluence of Alcalá Street, we have the Casino of Madrid, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, and returning on our steps, going down by Alcalá towards Plaza de Cibeles we will be able to visit the Instituto Cervantes, or the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and from there to contemplate the views of Madrid in its famous roof. Don't forget to take a photo of the Palace of Buenavista in Chueca, and crossing the Paseo de Recoletos, to the Palace of Linares.
Now we propose you to know an authentic Madrid, popular, for that we go to the Las Letras neighbourhood, in the heart of the city. Here stay in his passing for Madrid, some famous writers such as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina and Luis de Góngora, representatives of the Golden Age of Spanish literature, that travelled through the comedy corrals of the time surrounded by lovers of literature and art. Traditional snacks (tapas) are combined with avant-garde cuisine in this illustrated neighbourhood, where its traditional taverns of typical Madrid cuisine are mixed with the gastrobares. If we want to visit some monuments, we have close the Congress of Deputies, the Athenaeum of Madrid, the House Museum of Lope de Vega, the Convent of the Trinitarias and very close the Fountain of Neptune, where the Athletic Football Club of Madrid and its fans celebrate their sporting triumphs. Taking advantage of the fact that we are very close to the so-called old town, we cannot miss the Plaza Mayor, where after passing through its passageways and arches, such as Cuchilleros, we can imagine rogue and swordsmen in their disputes, who attended the festivities of the time, bullfights, crowns and various typical meetings of the public square. In the whole area you will find countless bars, terraces and taverns where you can recover your strength tasting the typical snack of squids or some wild potatoes, with a beer. Don't leave here without taking a picture of the equestrian statue of Felipe III, before visiting other points of interest such as the Plaza de la Villa.
Taking advantage of the low temperatures, what a better idea than having breakfast in any of the coffee shops in the area to gather strength with a good chocolate with churros. To get to know the so-called Madrid de los Austrias, we walk to the Plaza de Oriente where we have the Royal Palace, built on the ruins of the old Alcazar, and the gardens of Sabatini. Next to it, is located the Almudena Cathedral, with its museum that gives access to the dome to admire the views of the Sierra Madrileña. Opposite the Royal Theatre and very close to the Collegiate Church of San Isidro, and the Basilicas of San Miguel and San Francisco el Grande. If we want to breathe fresh air, we can do it in the West Park, one of the most extensive gardens in the city. In the extension of the park we find the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian building that treasures in its garden one of the most enigmatic sunsets of the capital. Going down the Cuesta de San Vicente, we arrive at the old Príncipe Pío Station, a building declared of historic interest and now converted into a shopping centre, which offers a complete range of fashion, gastronomy and leisure activities. If we still have strength, we can use any of the public means of transport to continue breathing fresh air in the Retiro Park, a real lung of Madrid where you can spend the afternoon looking at Casón del Buen Retiro, Palacio de Cristal, or the beautiful gardens of Cecilio Rodríguez among other things, and above all enjoy the harmony of colours offered by this green paradise. Taking advantage of your location, don't miss the Puerta de Alcalá, which you will find when you leave the garden through Plaza de la Independencia. Nearby we have one of the best-known churches in Madrid, San Manuel and San Benito, of neo-Byzantine architecture, which stands out for its tower of clear evocation of the Italian bells. We finish our tour, taking a tour of the National Archaeological Museum located on Serrano Street near the Plaza de Colón, which treasures one of the most important ancient collections in the world, from prehistoric times to the 19th century.
Less than an hour from the capital, we find different towns worth visiting. This is the case of San Lorenzo de El Escorial with its Royal Monastery considered the eighth wonder of the world; Alcalá de Henares, a World Heritage City and birthplace of Cervantes, where its varied gastronomic offer will leave no one indifferent; Aranjuez, also a World Heritage Site, whose harmony thanks to its natural spaces, history and art, will invite us to visit it on more than one occasion to discover its Royal Palace, its gardens or the Royal Riverboat Museum. Other interesting one-day excursions that we propose you: the visit to the Manzanares El Real Castle and La Pedriza, or Chinchón, that located to the southeast of the capital, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees of the Vega del Tajuña, was scene of film thanks to its well-known Plaza and its Historic Centre that were declared Historical Artistic Site in 1974. But if what you want for this last day is to be in touch with nature, in our region you could enjoy different routes with different degrees of difficulty to enjoy even in family. The Manzanares Riverside Park by bicycle, from Madrid Río to Rivas-Vaciamadrid, is an excursion to take into account if the weather in these dates does not prevent it, but there are many more destinations that you will be able to discover in this link.
