Less than 40 kilometres from the capital, in the basin of Guadarrama, is the Madrid town of Colmenarejo. Its history and its privileged location in the Sierra de Guadarrama, make it a favourite destination for those looking to practice some winter sports or just active tourism throughout the year.
We invite you to walk its streets to enjoy the beauty of its buildings, like the City Hall in the Constitución Square, or the church of Santiago Apostle dedicated to the patron saint of the town and dating from the sixteenth century.
Also interesting are the traditional houses as the 'Fundición' and 'de las Minas', proof of the exploitation of copper mineral that was in the area; or the source and 'pilas del Navazo' and source of Pozuelo, from the XVII century.
If you like mineralogy do not miss the mining complex 'Antigua Pilar' where you will witness of spectacular formations of copper salts, with beautiful turquoise and blue colours and a variety of micro-crystalline formations.
But there is also time for sport, thanks to the presence of the well-known Valmayor reservoir in the vicinity of the town, the area is ideal to practice different water sports such as sailing, canoeing, rowing or windsurfing.
Enjoy in touch with free air thanks to the different paths of the Regional Park of the middle course of the Guadarrama River and its environment, consisting of a net of routes with public roads and livestock trails, through which passes or has traditionally passed livestock traffic. In the town run seven of these routes, suitable for cyclists and walkers.
From 6 to 21 May, the city will offer the 'VI Festival de Jazz de Colmenarejo. Jazz español sin fronteras. Larry Martin' which was declared Festival of cultural interest of the Region of Madrid, will host renowned artists, becoming in one of the most important cultural events in Colmenarejo.
You will have to wait until the last weekend of June to attend its medieval market, where the music and atmosphere flood the historic centre of the town, or have fun in its festivities of 'Saint James the Apostle', which will take place on 25th of July. Also highlights the Pilgrimage of the Virgin of the Lonely on September 3.
