We present this interesting route through the Sierra Norte de Madrid, part of one of the routes of 'Welcome to the Region of Madrid'. Discover some of the most popular destinations in the Valley of Lozoya, where you can enjoy a wide range of charming villages, historical heritage, gastronomy and outdoor activities.
We start our route in Colmenar Viejo, stately town until the nineteenth century that still conserves its houses and outbuildings of those days. Stands out for its outstanding artistic heritage, highlighting elements as prominent as the Church of the Assumption, a jewel of Gothic style with Renaissance elements; the chapel of Our Lady of the Remedios, a Baroque work or the Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi. We recommend a walk through the old town, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Luis Gutierrez and of course, enjoy the natural environment that has located in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The gastronomy incorporates the most typical dishes of the traditional Madrid cuisine that can be savoured in its numerous taverns, bars and restaurants.
The town of Rascafría is the second destination of our route. This beautiful Villa located in the spectacular landscape of the Valley of Lozoya, is perfect for lovers of heritage, integrated into the natural environment, in which we highlight the Monastery of Santa María del Paular, Benedictine abbey founded in 1390. The view from the bridge of Forgiveness to the Monastery, is a wonderful picture we have to look. If walked by this mountain village, we will discover unique places like the Plaza de los Trastámaras or the neomudejar style City Hall, Plaza de la Villa and of course the monumental Church of St. Andrew the Apostle. The most demanding palates are in luck, to walk this town because there are special gastronomic days to mushrooms, hunt and wine, seasonally, and a wide variety of dishes made with natural ingredients of the area. The Active Tourism offer is very wide, you can choose one of its Green Routes, we recommend you the one that part of the Bridge of Forgiveness or Peñalara Natural Park. Enjoy them!
The end point of our route is Buitrago del Lozoya, located in the middle valley of Lozoya, stands on a promontory, which forms a natural barrier, and lies at the foot of the port of Somosierra. Its medieval wall that incorporates the Muslim and Christian culture surrounds the old town. The Clock Tower, the Castle or Fortress and the Church of Santa María del Castillo gives it a unique and worth visiting medieval appearance. Picasso is present in Buitrago through a museum with 60 drawings, lithographs and ceramics made between 1950 and 1965 and donated by the artist to his barber, neighbour of this town, Eugenio Arias. The Nature Tourism offer is varied in this town through multiple hiking routes.
