Ruta por el Pontón de la Oliva y por el interior de sus Cárcavas

We are in a unique route, which runs through a landscape in the canyon of the Lozoya River, full of history. The enjoyment of hiking lovers is reflected in this tour, which starts at the Ponton de la Oliva dam, the oldest built in the region, in the mid nineteenth century. Located, near Patones in the canyon of the Lozoya River and delves into the Cárcavas formed by water erosion, reddish colour and appearance of another planet.

The route starts on the right bank of the M-134 road, after passing the town of Patones de Abajo, which gives way to the Ponton dam. This emerges as a wall of stepped walls, the result of the work of hundreds of prisoners at the time, and it never perform its goal, since the end of its construction was observed, who suffered numerous leaks in the adjoining land so the water disappearing under the wall of the reservoir.

Impress the hung walkway in the canyon wall and exposes the working conditions in which the dam was performed; also at this point you can see the cliffs where climbers demonstrate their skills.

The profile of the route from the GR-10, is low-lying except for a short steep slope between hills at the beginning of the route. It is therefore suitable to do it calmly and without further requirements like good shoes and water needed. We must follow the course of the path to the stream of La Lastra and for its side, following the flow of the waters, will finish inside the 'cárcavas' (gully). Caves and channels that allow cautiously, let enjoy a wonder created by nature. The path runs through the central channel, as most of the other channels have no way out. To finish in the top of the 'cárcava' (gully), we get down a hillside, following a small rise rather steep. Once crowned the top, we can take pictures with a privileged view, for the day trip will be unforgettable.

We also have the possibility of making the excursion above the ground, without having to go down, which makes it easier. From this position we can discover the vertical walls, battlements, pinnacles continuously growing and favoured by the lack of vegetation. Care should be taken if we approach the edge, since the surface is not as strong and there is a danger of collapse. The direction of travel is northeast, leaving the 'cárcava' (gully) to the right, where the landscape is barren, sculpted by the wind. We ended the march in a small pine forest, in which right and cresting a small hill, we find the apex of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The return takes place through the pine forest towards the 'Cárcavas' (gully) in the opposite direction to the starting.

There are possibilities to explore other routes for trails in the area, which lead us to discover natural sites and the fauna of the region from cows until a deer.
